Karakalpakstan is located in a unique historical zone, in which there are several hundred historical monuments dating back to different eras. The territory of the modern Republic of Karakalpakstan is a kind of "archaeological reserve", which currently numbers over 300 archaeological sites.

The most famous cities are: Nukus - the capital of the state; Kungrad; Muynak, Chimbay; Khojeyli; Turtkul; Beruni.
